One of the most popular artists who used this type of painting is Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. Due to his mental illness he stayed in a hospital, during his stay, the clinic and its garden became the main subjects of his paintings. He was allowed short supervised walks, which led to paintings of cypresses and olive trees.
