Atmospheric Perspective

Leonardo da Vinci, Mona Lisa 1503-1506
Musée du Louvre
Inv. 779
The effect of the atmosphere on the appearance of element in a landscape is one of the chief preoccupations of Leonardo’s notebook. Leonardo was the one who puts the rules of the atmospheric or aerial perspective. This rule state that the quality of the atmosphere between us and large objects. Objects farther away from us appear less distinct and the contrast between light and dark is reduced. We can see that in the Mona Lisa, the face the neck and the hand have high level of light and dark contrast however the background has low contrast.
