Cross-hatching

Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475-1564
Ideal Head (Head of a young man; an Idealized Bust; Female Head)
Head in Profile attrib. Tommaso de Cavalieri
Htching is an area of closely spaced parallel lines or hatches. The the closer the spacing of the line the, the darker the area. An example of hatching can be seen in the Ideal Head a drawing by Michelangelo. The drawing is an example of cross-hatching where the greatest sense of volume is achieved. In the corss-hatching, one set of hatches is crossed at an angel by a second and sometimes by a third set. The denser the lines the darker the area.
